Gel Polish vs. Builder Gel: What’s the Difference?
Understanding the differences between gel polish and builder gel (also known as structured manicures) is essential for choosing the best option for your nail care needs. Both offer unique benefits and are suited to different preferences and nail conditions.
Gel Polish
Gel polish is a long-lasting nail colour applied with a base coat, two coats of colour, and a topcoat, all cured under a UV or LED lamp for a durable, glossy finish.
Pros:
Quick Application: Typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, making it a great option for those short on time.
Variety of Colours: Offers a wide range of shades and finishes to suit every style.
Less Commitment: Since gel polish is removed and reapplied each time, there’s no need for infills, you can change colours and styles easily. Also great if want your nails done for a one-off specific occasion or holiday rather than keeping up regular appointments.
Cons:
Limited Strength: Does not significantly strengthen or reinforce the nails.
Regular Removal: Needs to be fully removed and reapplied approximately every 3 weeks, depending on the client’s lifestyle and aftercare.
Cost:
Slightly cheaper than builder gel due to shorter appointment times and lower product costs.
Ideal For:
Clients with strong, healthy natural nails who don’t need extra strength or added length.
Those who prefer quicker appointment times.
Anyone looking for a wide range of colour options with a natural feel.
Clients who like changing their nails often without committing to regular infills.
Builder Gel / Structured Manicures
Builder gel is a thicker, more durable gel that adds structure and strength to natural nails. It provides additional protection, helping nails grow longer and reducing breakage.
Pros:
Enhanced Strength: Reinforces the natural nails, making them less prone to bending or snapping.
Supports Nail Growth: Adds a protective layer, allowing your natural nails to grow out strong and healthy underneath.
Durable and Long-Lasting: Unlike gel polish, builder gel can be infilled every 3 weeks rather than fully removed, maintaining its structure and balance.
Natural Look with Colour Flexibility: Builder gel tends to come in nude, natural, or sheer shades, so is great if that is your style. Gel polish can also be applied on top of builder gel for colour.
Cons:
Longer Application Time: Builder gel appointments take longer than gel polish, typically 1.5 to 2 hours, as the structure needs to be carefully built and balanced. Could be longer if you add gel polish colour or nail art on top.
Higher Maintenance: Requires regular infills every 3 weeks to maintain strength and avoid lifting.
Higher Cost: Due to the extra time required and the higher cost of builder gel, appointments are typically more expensive than gel polish manicures.
If gel polish is added on top of builder gel, the cost increases further due to additional time and product use.
Ideal For:
Clients with weak, brittle, or peeling nails who need added reinforcement.
Those looking to grow their natural nails while keeping them protected.
Nail biters who want to break the habit, builder gel helps create a protective barrier, reducing the temptation to bite.
Anyone who prefers a longer-lasting manicure that doesn’t require full removal every 3 weeks.
Clients who like a natural, clean look but also want the option of adding gel polish for colour.
Which One is Right for You?
Choosing between gel polish and builder gel depends on your nail goals and lifestyle.
· If you have naturally strong, healthy nails and want a quick, glossy manicure with a variety of colour options, gel polish is the perfect choice. It’s also ideal if you don’t want the commitment of regular infills.
· If you need extra strength, want to grow your natural nails, or prefer a longer-lasting manicure with infills rather than full removal, builder gel is the better option. It requires more maintenance but provides durability and structure.
· Cost & Time Consideration: Gel polish is usually cheaper and quicker, while builder gel takes longer to apply and maintain but offers greater strength and longevity. Adding gel polish to builder gel increases the appointment time and cost.
