Summer Nail Care: How to Keep Your Nails Looking Fresh on Holiday

Whether you’re heading off on a beach holiday, exploring a sunny city, or enjoying warmer weather at home, your nails need a little extra care in summer. Heat, sun, sunscreen, and swimming can all impact the look and longevity of your gel manicure - but with the right tips, your nails can stay fresh and flawless from take-off to touch-down.

Here’s how to look after your nails during the warmer months, whether you’re at home or abroad.

1. Book Your Appointment a Few Days Before You Travel

If you’re going away, aim to have your nails done 1–3 days before your trip. This gives them time to settle and reduces the risk of early chips from packing or travel stress. Let your nail tech know you’ll be on holiday - they might adjust the product, shape, or finish to suit your plans and climate.

2. Be Mindful With Water and Chlorine

Too much time in water can soften the nail and cause lifting, especially at the free edge or cuticle area. Pools and hot tubs are also full of chlorine, which can break down gel and lead to lifting or dullness.

Top tips:

  • Limit soaking your hands in water when you can.

  • Rinse and dry hands thoroughly after swimming.

3. Sunscreen: Great for Skin, Not Always for Nails

SPF is essential, especially in strong sun - but it can leave a residue that dulls or stains gel polish and affects its shine. After applying sunscreen, gently wipe or rinse your nails to keep them glossy. And don’t forget: SPF isn’t a moisturiser. You’ll still need to hydrate the skin around your nails separately.

4. Use Cuticle Oil Daily (Yes, Even on Holiday!)

Sun, sea and air-con can all dry out your hands and nails. Cuticle oil keeps the nail plate flexible and hydrated, helping your manicure last longer. It also prevents peeling and cracking around the sidewalls. Pick up a cuticle oil pen before you go - it’s leak-free, handbag-safe, and super easy to use on the go. Apply daily, especially after sun exposure or swimming, and your nails will thank you.

5. Sun Exposure Can Affect Gel Colour

Prolonged sun exposure can fade or alter some gel colours, especially bright pinks, which tend to be more sensitive to UV light. If you’re sunbathing or out exploring every day, you might notice a shift in colour by the end of your trip.

Top tip: Apply SPF 30 or higher to the backs of your hands daily. It helps protect both your skin and your manicure.

6. Pack a Nail File, Keysie & Mini Repair Kit

Holiday nails are exposed to more wear and tear - think luggage, suncream lids, sand, and swimwear straps. It’s a good idea to take a few essentials:

  • Fine nail file

  • Orange stick

  • Cuticle oil pen

  • Plasters (in case of cracks)

  • Your Keysie, if you have one. It’s ideal for opening cans or anything fiddly without damaging your nails. (I keep them in stock in the studio if you need one.)

If something chips or lifts, resist the urge to pick. File gently and hydrate until you can get it repaired professionally.

7. Book Your Next Appointment in Advance

If you’re going away for a while - or know you’ll be back to work or events shortly after - book your removal or infill before you leave. This avoids overgrown nails, forgotten removals, or delays in your usual routine.

Final Thoughts

Summer nails can last beautifully with the right care. From avoiding chlorine buildup to hydrating daily with cuticle oil, just a few small changes can make a big difference to your manicure’s appearance and longevity.

If you’ve got a holiday coming up, let me know at your appointment - I’ll make sure your nails are sun, sea, and suitcase ready.
